Small changes. Big difference.
You’ve probably put a lot of thought into your services, your pricing, and your branding and your messaging. But what about your website?
If you feel as though your website is gathering dust instead of generating client enquiries, chances are your site isn’t doing the best job of showing people that you’re the one they want to work with.
The good news? You don’t need to rebuild the whole thing. Just a few strategic tweaks can go a long way. And these 5 are easy wins – even if tech isn’t your thing.
1. Put your face front and centre
One of the fastest ways to build trust online? Show up. Literally.
Your website is the digital version of you welcoming someone into your business. And just like in real life, people want to see who they’re talking to. A friendly, natural-looking photo of you on your homepage, ideally near the top, instantly makes you more approachable.
No need for a full-on photoshoot. A well-lit headshot, where you’re looking at the camera (and not awkwardly holding a mug of tea unless that’s very on-brand), does the job.
Why it matters: People hire people. And when visitors can put a face to the name, it makes you feel more real — which helps them feel more confident about getting in touch.
2. Move your testimonials up
If you’ve buried your client love down at the bottom of the page (or worse, on a separate testimonials tab that no one clicks), it’s time to bring them into the spotlight.
Choose one short, powerful quote from a happy client and pop it right near the top of your home page. Something that clearly says:
“This worked. It helped. It’s worth it.”
Keep it brief. We’re not looking for three paragraphs about how transformative their life has been since working with you (even if that’s totally true). A few lines that highlight the results or experience are all you need.
Bonus tip: Add a photo or name if you have permission — it boosts credibility even more.
3. Make your headline clearer, not cleverer
I get it – we all want to sound interesting and unique. But when your home page headline says something like “Empowering you to lead your best life”… people have no idea what you do.
The goal of your headline is simple:
To tell people what you do and who you help.
Let’s say you’re a coach. You might try something like:
- “Helping busy professionals find more balance without burning out”
- “Business coaching for creatives who are ready to grow and scale”
- “Relationship therapy for blended families navigating the complicated dynamics”
Yes, it feels obvious. But obvious works.
Remember: You’ve got about 3 seconds before someone clicks away. Let them know they’re in the right place.
4. Give people one clear action to take
So many websites fall into the “choose your own adventure” trap. There’s a newsletter signup, a services tab, a blog, a free quiz, a ‘book now’ button, and that one page you forgot was even live.
And suddenly… your visitor doesn’t know what to do next. So they do nothing.
Instead: choose one main goal for your home page, and focus everything around that.
Want them to book a call? That’s your main button.
Prefer them to download your freebie? Make that front and centre.
Selling a course? That should be the next logical step.
Make the button big, clear, and friendly. Use language like:
- “Let’s chat”
- “Book your free call”
- “Grab your free guide”
And repeat that same call-to-action a few times down the page so they don’t have to scroll back up hunting for it.
Small detail, big impact: Make the button stand out. A contrasting colour works better than another pale beige block.
5. Make booking or getting in touch ridiculously easy
Nothing kills a potential enquiry faster than a clunky booking process.
Here’s what you don’t want:
- A contact form with 15 required fields
- A “get in touch” button that goes nowhere
- A broken scheduling link (it happens more than you’d think)
- Or worse… no clear way to reach you at all
Here’s what you do want:
- A short contact form (name, email, message – that’s all you need right now)
- Or a link to your online scheduler (like Calendly or Acuity. Or if you’re on a shoestring, search for TidyCal on AppSumo)
- A friendly message that reassures them what will happen next (e.g. “You’ll get a reply within 48 hours.”)
Think of it this way: You’ve done the hard work of getting someone to your site and earning their interest. Don’t let a fiddly form stop them from taking the next step.
Bonus tweak: Dust off your copy
If your website still sounds like the version of you from two years ago, it might be time to give your words a little refresh.
Ask yourself:
- Is this still how I talk about my work?
- Does it sound like me, or like someone who did a copywriting course?
- Would my ideal client feel like this page was written for them?
You don’t need to rewrite the whole thing. Just updating a few key sentences can give your site a whole new energy.
TL;DR? Start small.
You don’t need to burn your website down and start again. Just making a few of these tweaks can help more of the right people stick around, and actually book you.
- Show your face
- Highlight a testimonial
- Get clear on what you do
- Guide them to the next step
- Make it easy to connect
