How elephants, hippos and crocs shaped my career

Last updated Jul 20, 2020

This is a story of my love for wildlife.

A far cry from my usual WordPress or marketing orientated posts.

This was the view from my hut.

Every morning when I opened my door, the first thing I saw were crocs snoozing, hippos chortling and elephants sauntering.

I never got bored of that sight – each morning it was different, but always abundant and always thrilling.

For most of 2001, I woke each morning to the clatter of baboons on my roof, and fell asleep at night listening to the munching sounds of the hippo as they foraged around my hut at night.

I was working in remote area of Zambia, and they were glorious carefree days, where each day brought a new wildlife adventure.

I didn’t manage to speak to my long-suffering mother for 4 months when I first arrived – our nearest phone was 3 hours drive away, and each time I made the journey, the lines were down. Long wave radio was our only method of communication, and the internet was a distant dream.

The idea that within months of leaving this idyll I would be managing a website to try save this incredible environment was inconceivable.

It was inevitable that these glorious days couldn’t last forever, and as the rains approached, I shipped out to California to work as the Marketing Director of a conservation organisation, implementing education and conservation programs on the ground in Zambia.

We had a terrific website, but no budget for our agency to maintain it.

So I set out to learn code.

It was a monumental task, involving poring over tomes of books as there simply weren’t the resources available on the internet that there are now.

I had terrific support from my then-CEO, who was a tech wizard.

And my experience there set me up to establish my own successful web design and internet marketing agency when I returned to the UK in 2003.

Why do I tell you all this?

Because the days of needing to learn code to manage or even build your own website are long gone.

You don’t need to go through weeks and months of reading books to create your own website. And you don’t need to have 15 years of marketing experience to make sure it drives results for you.

You just need a passion for what you offer, and an ambition to change lives.

There has never been a better time to take control of your own online marketing, and that all starts with your website.

Everyone’s reasons for wanting to learn are different.

But if you’re a coach or therapist who:

  • Doesn’t know where to start with a website
  • Is frustrated by the lack of results you’re seeing on your existing website
  • Wants to break free from your reliance on a web designer
