With over 2 million websites using Divi, you can be sure that you’re in safe hands with this choice as a theme. It’s my theme of choice for all my own websites, and it’s what I teach on my Rock That Website course.
What you're about to read
Can I get Divi for free?
Due to the fact that people have to pay to use it, most people want to try Divi before they purchase it. And you CAN try it out for free on their website before you commit. Just visit this page and click on the ‘try it for free’ demo link.
However, where many themes provide a free version, Elegant Themes, the creators of the Divi theme doesn’t offer the option.
But there is a way! Elegant Themes offers a 30-day, no-questions-asked refund. You can purchase the theme, upload it to your site and enjoy an entire month of using it and trying it out before deciding whether you want to keep it or not.
If you’ve worked with me as a client or built your own website in my course Rock That Website, you know I love using Divi.
If not, you may be wondering, what is it? And why should I use a Divi theme when building a WordPress site?
So what is Divi?
Divi is a WordPress theme available for purchase from Elegant Themes.
WordPress offers many free themes, and Divi is a premium theme, meaning that you need to pay to use it.
Unlike other WordPress themes, Divi is a theme, a visual website builder and a template builder – more on that in a moment.
When you upload the Divi theme, you automatically have access to the Divi website builder.
But even if you’re using another theme, you can still use the Divi Builder. So if you’re doing a revamp, and they don’t have a page builder, you can still use it.
This makes it a really smart choice. I’ll speak more about the builder and the value of Divi in a moment.
What are the benefits of using it to build a WordPress website?
There are so many reasons why I recommend Divi for anyone who is building their first WordPress sites.
Not only is the Divi theme easy to use due to its real-time visual editor and drag-and-drop modules. The separate Divi Builder plugin allows you to use the visual builder on any WordPress theme you choose. In other words, you don’t ever have to touch a line of code.
Divi also makes integrations easy. If you need to set up an ecommerce store, connect your site to your email provider, or run split tests on your content and design.
How do I purchase and what is the cost?
If you end up loving Divi as much as I do, you can pay for it with an annual subscription or a one-time fee for lifelong access.
I recommend purchasing the lifetime access, as this will save you money in the long run. But if you’re not quite ready to make the commitment, it’s perfectly fine to pay annually until you are.
I’m also going to share a way you can try the Divi theme FREE so that you can see if it’s right for you.
But first, I’m going to share some of the many reasons why I love Divi, and why I install it for all my students of Rock That Website when they build their first website.
Divi has an active community with loads of tutorials, free theme templates, and support
Divi is the world’s most popular website builder, which means your theme purchase is packed with features like free website layouts, access to regular updates by Elegant Themes, and superior customer support, in addition to all the features of Divi itself.
Because Divi is so popular, it boasts an engaged online community of devotees and resources to enhance your experience.
In my free Facebook group, the WordPress Happy Community, I offer training about creating and marketing your own website and becoming a more successful entrepreneur. You can join us there to tune into my daily livestreams and ask questions to learn from me and other entrepreneurs just like you as you navigate WordPress, online marketing and the rollercoaster of entrepreneurship.
There are numerous sites that offer free layouts for the Divi theme and plenty of other resources including full documentation from Elegant Themes, video tutorials on YouTube, and even local Divi Meetup groups.
There is power in numbers, and when you’re building your website, it’s so important to have easy access to support and community. Due to the popularity of Divi, you’ll never have to worry about getting your questions answered. Either through their support channels, or through community forums.
Offers quick and easy construction with the visual builder and is fully customizable
Due to Divi’s huge popularity, you may be worried that your Divi-built website will end up looking generic and too similar to the other hundreds of thousands of websites that already use it.
Not to worry! This leads us to the next reason why I love Divi: it is not only easy to use, it is extremely customisable and you can make your website as unique as you like.
The power of the Divi Builder is in its visual interface.
If you use WordPress’s native Gutenberg editor to create your website, you’re working in the editing area of the site. This is the interface that enables you to add content, but doesn’t give you much control of the design.
So it’s hard to understand how this interface will translate onto the look and user experience of your site. This tool also requires the extra step of saving and previewing your site every time you want to see the changes you’ve made.
That’s where the magic of Divi comes in.
The Divi theme comes packaged with a live visual editor that allows for code-free, drag and drop website creation that you can see as you build it. AND… optimises your site for different device sizes, such as mobile and tablet, as well.
There is a growing number of elements that you can choose to add to your site, including galleries, forms, buttons, testimonials, and sliders. You can easily change the font, colors, shapes, and layouts allowing for a truly customised site.
You also have access to the Divi Theme Builder. This is a slightly more advanced feature that allows for customisation of any element within the Divi theme, such as the headers and footers which were frustrating to configure.
The ease of the Divi Builder cannot be overstated. It takes away the overwhelm and confusion that users new to WordPress often experience when confronted with building a website.
Divi integrates out of the box with sales and marketing platforms like WooCommerce, MailChimp, and Convertkit.
If you’re here on my site, you know that I help small business owners, coaches, and entrepreneurs build beautiful WordPress websites.
My teaching goes beyond site building and extends into marketing as well. After all, what good is a beautiful site if you can’t drive traffic to it, capture contact information for new leads, and convert visitors to customers?
The third reason why I love Divi is because it seamlessly supports easy integration with multiple tools you’ll need for marketing and sales.
This means you can build your website, create sales funnels by connecting onsite opt-ins to your email provider of choice. Also enables the option put up a beautiful online store powered by WooCommerce all within Divi.
Within the Divi family, there are many plugins to carry out common marketing tasks. You can build custom opt-in forms with Bloom, link to your social media and make it easy to share your content with Monarch, and so much more.
The fluidity of these built-in features and third-party integrations will help you execute your marketing plan efficiently and with minimal technical setbacks.
Divi is secure for your users and customers, and with automatic backups, it offers peace of mind for you!
Have you ever made changes to the design of your website, or any document online, and then lost everything due to a browser crash?
Starting over is time-consuming and frustrating. Fortunately, Divi not only saves your edits in the builder so you can move forward and backward between them, it also creates browser backups. It also offers you the option to restore your last edits if your browser crashes.
You can even download your browser backups for an extra layer of security. I am a vocal advocate of frequent backups, but I still appreciate that it is doing it for me in the worst-case scenario that I experience a browser crash before I hit save.
So it has you covered in terms of site recoverability, which is the fourth reason why I love it so much. I never have to worry about losing my work.
Divi offers great value
Some of this I’ve already covered, but the fifth reason I recommend Divi is the value it presents, so it’s worth mentioning again.
Whether you sign up to the annual subscription or one-time lifetime access purchase, you get the Divi theme with the Divi Builder, as well as access to Elegant Themes Divi documentation and support, hundreds of free Divi templates, and all future updates to the software.
What’s more, you can use the Divi theme and builder for as many sites as you’d like to create.
So if you want to build websites for multiple businesses, your one-time purchase or subscription will cover you for an unlimited number of sites (you would have to secure hosting and a domain name for each site, of course, but you would not have to purchase it again).
For a WordPress theme, Divi offers incredible value. It has been an absolute game changer for my business, my clients, and my students.
With the 30 day guarantee from Elegant Themes, you can try it without any risk, and with a 10% discount.
Drawbacks of Divi
As with anything, there are some limitations to Divi’s perfection, and you’ll need to consider these carefully when you’re making the choice about whether to purchase or not.
Here are some of the most common concerns that users experience with Divi.
Is the Divi theme slow?
You know as well as I do that user attention spans are at an all-time low, and each millisecond is precious when a new visitor lands on your site. Even a short delay can be off-putting and cause someone to navigate away from your site before they even have a chance to see it!
There have been some murmurs that it is slow to load.
In my experience with building many sites using Divi, the load speed has been fine. It’s often the other stuff that people add which start the website grinding.
However, if you run a speed test and find it lacking, there are numerous things you can do to speed up your loading times, including using a host that supports Divi, compressing your images, and minifying files so they load more quickly.
I use SiteGround for my site hosting, which specialises in supporting Divi. For image compression, I like the Smush plugin. In 2019, Elegant Themes added a built-in minifier to Divi, which you can turn on so the page will load static CSS, speeding up load times.
All of these are standard steps you’d take to speed up any website. If you’re worried about load speed these are simple ways to improve it.
Is Divi hard to learn?
As with any new tool, there is a learning curve. Because Divi has so many features and is so different from the WordPress website builder, it can seem overwhelming at first.
However, once you get the hang of it, I’m confident that you’ll be grateful for taking the time to learn it.
Plus, you don’t have to go it alone! When you’re new to something, it’s so helpful to have a community where you can ask questions. This is why I invite you to join my WordPress Happy Facebook group where we are talking about websites and marketing every day.
I go live in the group several times a week as well, and you are welcome to ask questions there.
And, if you’re ready to learn, step-by-step, how to build a marketable website that attracts visitors and converts them to customers, then check out my signature course, Rock That Website. In eight weeks, I’ll take you from beginner to fully fluent in WordPress and Divi, and you’ll have a website you’re proud of and ready to launch.
Is it hard to transfer my site from Divi to another theme?
This is perhaps one of the only real drawbacks to using Divi.
Because of the way Divi compresses code, once you have a site built with this theme, these shortcodes may not translate perfectly to another theme.
This is why I recommend you try it out, and if it’s not the perfect fit for you, you can move on before you invest too much time customising your site on the Divi theme.
How to try Divi for free for 30 Days
So how can you try Divi risk free?
Elegant Themes offers a 30 day money-back guarantee for all purchases of Divi!
This means you can download the software, build your site on Divi, test it for 30 days, and if you don’t absolutely love it, you can get your money back.
While some themes are offered on a freemium basis, meaning you can get certain features of the theme for free, but pay for access to the complete set of features, Elegant Themes does not provide this option for Divi.
I believe it’s because the power of Divi lies in its extensive set of features, and to offer just a small set of them would not adequately showcase everything you can do with it.
The guarantee is no questions asked, so there’s no risk in trying it. Plus, if you follow this link to download, you’ll get 10% off the price!
I also want to mention that if you search hard enough, you may find some “free Divi theme downloads” in certain corners of the internet.
This may be tempting, but I strongly recommend you scroll past and spend the money with Elegant Themes. Relying on the money-back guarantee if you’re not sure it’s worth the price.
Apart from the fact that you don’t know the actual contents of the “free” downloads, you won’t have access to the updates by the developers at Elegant Themes. Which leaves you vulnerable to security issues and incompatibilities with plugins.
So, there is a hidden cost to a pirated, “free” download, and it’s not worth it. With the 30 day guarantee from Elegant Themes, you can try without risk, and use this link to get 10% off.
So now you know why I recommend the Divi theme.
I believe the Divi Builder is easy to use, that offers great value, and that is a fast and secure theme. I love how it integrates with popular sales and marketing software, and I appreciate the support and documentation of the lively online community.
If you’re not convinced yet, please do join us in the WordPress Happy Community to ask any questions that you have. I can’t wait to see you over there.
